Get him what he wants, but alo talk to a kilt maker, maybe a contemporary tartan kilt is in order.

If he's gonna wear a kilt, I agree with him that he should get tartan. I'd suggest that a USAKilts casual might be a good way to go, velcro can give him a little better range of sizes if he's growing, he'll just want to get a kilt belt too to make up for having no straps. I have a UTKilt, but it's just for hiking and outdoor work, I wear my USA casual or USA semi-traditional if I'm out in public (I'm saving up for a good wool tank, or hoping to stumble over a good used one)

By all means, if your son wants a Black Watch kilt get it for him. The lad is showing class.

First off let me say I'm the father of two daughters (18 & 22) and I know the parenting experience is very different with young women and young men. That said, my wife and I realized early on that buying clothes for our daughters was fraught with disaster. They had a clothing allowance and it was up to them to make the decisions. You might want to do the same. That way he gets to research the choices, accessories, etc....which is half the fun anyway.

MM, I understand what you are thinking (and I'm pretty sure that you're alined with the consensus here) but, when it comes to dealing with our children, we best lead by example. So when it comes to the idea that you like X and Y and he prefers Y and X, you're not on opposite pages, you're on opposite sides of the same page and, to me, that's a good thing. You've taught him to appreciate his heritage and embrace the kilt but, more importantly, you've taught him to think for himself.

I let mine pick his first. Then, I got him another for Christmas. Now, I'm waiting for him to want another.
