FYI, you should be able to get 15 eight yard kilts from a 60 yd full bolt of tartan.

    Hi guys,
I'm very interested too. The amount I buy will likely depend on price, but it's worth saving up for, I really like it. I suppose English Bloke wears his - I'm jealous, John. I wonder if there is an example in the Collection of Hamish.
Matt's advice that a 60 yard bolt is good for 15 8-yard kilts implies that the material would be double width.

Thanks Matt. As always your posts are a beacon of knowledge cutting through the fog of ignorance. Succinct too.

I share your envy of English Bloke. I wonder how he came by the ex-army kilt? My 'collector' instinct (which is very strong) wants to know where to find such treasures.

I am sure EB will chime in at some point, but I believe he has a very good mate in Australia who is ex Army and assisted him is sourcing the kilt.
EB does not actually wear the kilt due to the measurements being not of his proportions. At the time he was most jealous of his lovely wife because it fitted her wonderfully and I believe is now "her" kilt

Just an update. Doug from All Things Tartan tells me that he has sorted out the order with Strathmore and the STA and is now confident that the cloth produced will be as per the design meant by John Reid, the designer. He expects about 10 weeks for the cloth to be delivered to his store, so about the end of September I guess. I have been quoted AUD550 for the full 'tank' (an 8 yd kilt in the 13 oz weight cloth). I am sure if anyone else wants something made, Doug will be happy to oblige with a quote. All the best, John.

    Fixed that for you DK

The Kilt in question is my wife's. 'Tis true, it fits me not. It's a damaged, surplus 5/7 RAR Kilt and the story of why I have it and how I came by it is here. It is a beautiful tartan.

How much for just the material, per yard?

Wow! Thanks EB for the fantastic pics and the even more fantastic story!! In an odd kind of mirror image, it fits with my story too. My Great Grandfather was in the British Army during the Great War and emigrated to Australia in 1921 for his health. I am so glad he did! He still died too young from his wounds. My Grandfather served in the Australian Army during WWII, although he never became an Australian citizen. I am born and bred Australian and also served in the Australian Army but had a change of heart and went to sea. I am still an active Royal Australian Navy Reservist. I think your use of the Army rising sun cap badge and the shoulder flash as a kilt pin is inspired. I will borrow the idea and use my regimental badge as a kilt pin. I agree it is a great tartan, and I love the colours. When you fly over Australia, it is the exactly the colour of ochre in the kilt. Thanks again for the great pictures and the story. All the best, John.
