I was very fortunate in that my first time in a kilt was at last years highland games. Pretty easy to feel comfortable when you are surrounded by other men in kilts.

Kilting in public has definitely been easier made easier here in B.C with the help of some good friends (including Andrew) that have also gotten in to wearing kilts, and Vancouver's regular kilts nights. I must aslo thank Bear, as his no nonsense approach to kilt wearing is infectious and really boosts your confidence level.

Plus I have a great wife (see my gallery) that loves my kilts and supports me 110%. Nothing could look bad with her on my arm. The perfect kilt accessory....a beautiful woman.

    Colin,

With the wife on your arms smiling like she is sure would make kilt wearing enjoyable. Thank you for sharing a picture of your wife with us, another reason to be a proud kilt wearer.

    I Couldn't agree more

They say in Norway that fly fishing is an addiction, and the Wife's job is to make sure the patient is kept comfortable.

Could say the same about kilts

To Rufus: I get your point.
Maybe you should sell the coffee machine on e-bay, and Buy another kilt with the proceeds

I'm putting the trip together as I write this. I am taking my mother with me - she has never been to the UK. I have taken my father several times before (parents are divorced) and this is mom's retirement present from me.

I used to do alot of business in the UK so know it well. Will rent a car and start driving from Heathrow over to Stonehenge and Bath, then up to Caernarfon castle in Wales, then over to the Peterborough area, up through Yorkshire to see Hadrian's Wall again, then to Rosslyn Chapel (most excellent!) and then into Scotland. Will drive from Edinburgh to Stirling and then over to Kilmartin in Argyle, then up the coast to Ft. William and then onwards to Loch Ness and Inverness. If we have time, will take a day tour of Lewis (saw the Callanish standing stones last time, again most excellent) or drive up to John O'Groats and take a ferry over to Orkney. Then back down to Edinburgh via the highlands, this time stopping at the Culloden battlefield. Will also stop at the Scottish Crannog Centre (bronze age dwellings on a loch) at Loch Tay and Dunfermline Abbey before Edinburgh. Then train to London for the usual tourist haunts down there.

I figure I should get some great kilt pictures while on the trip - now I only have to decide whether or not to take both kilts or just one

The trip certainly is action-packed, but well worth it. Will probably drive around 2,000 miles before it is over in just 9 days.

I cannot wait to wear my kilt in Scotland. My mom is under the impression that most men in Scotland wear the kilt on a regular basis; I do not have the heart to share the reality with her. My wife supports me on wearing the kilt while on the trip although she knows how I like to keep a low profile while travelling so I do not attract unwanted attention to myself (I hate it when people know I am a tourist!) and is unsure how I am going to pull this off while wearing a kilt.

Guess it is time to stake out a higher profile 8)

BTW, the trip is July 10 - 20. And if anyone has any ideas of what kind of unique kilt accessory I should purchase while I am over there, please let me know.

    Thanks.

When in Stoke for the recent kilt night I was bemoaning the lack of response my kilt wearing received, where ever I went. The week after I went to a local garden centre and the girl there said 'very nice, I love a man in a kilt'. The day after at a car boot sale, a woman seller saw me and said 'I love to see a man in a skirt ( ), and she (her friend) loves men with tattoos so you could satisfy both of us.'
All this with my wife standing next to me, good job she's and understanding woman
Any time we go out it can feel like the first time, the trick is to enjoy it..
    Cheers Rhino

Hey! Come on Freelander. One of the great advantages of the kilt is that it DOES NOT wear out - unless you constantly wear a sporran CHAIN on it!!!!

Of all my kilts, the oldest was tailored for me in 1973 and, in spite of being worn for massive numbers of public displays of Scottish Country/Highland Dance over a period of seventeen years, and being my only kilt until about six years ago, it still looks and behaves like brand new.

    Giraffe,

If you have time, and would like to, I could meet you in London for a beer - and maybe a photo or two - when you get back down here from Scotland.

E-mail me at : lycrakilt@aol.com and I'll send you my 'phone number.

I imagine that the best kilt accessory one can buy in Scotland is ............... another kilt!!!

Several times at various highland games, I've seen guys drive into the parking lot, jump out of the car wearing shorts, pop open the boot, and strap on a kilt stored back there. Heaven forbid they should have to stop for gas or coffee wearing a kilt! Some of these men as it turns out had been band members!

My first public outing, Christmas 2001, was noteworthy only because it came up a blizzard. Although it was a positive experience, it all seem quite mundane now.
