I'm not sure what you mean by sarongs Jack. Here in Hawaii it is uncommon to srr anybody dressed in anything but standard american street wear except that shorts are common. In some of the south pacific nations like Fiji,Samoa, and Tonga a wrap around skirt like garment called a lava lava is quite common. They can be quite dressy and solid colored. They canalso be in the form of a piece of cloth approx 1 meter by 2 meters, usually bright tropical prints. Men wear it as a wrap around and twisted and tucked ( I wear one at home frequently).Women wear it wrapped and tied behind the neck. To be honest most local men are quite prudish.
I usually get a few snikers when I wear a kilt, but no really rude comments. I do not wear a woolen kilt here, but rather an acrylic kilt from Stillwater, or a Buzz Kidder canvas.
Thanks Vince. I've been here for 14 yrs. now. I know that when I move to Victoria BC later this year that I will miss a lot of things.
You're leaving Hawaii for Victoria! Are you nuts! All kidding a side, you will love Victoria. It is my prefered Canadian city, I love the pace and I love the atmosphere of the place. I only wish I was moving there too. I'm sure your kilts will blend right in there. We'll all have to have a BC kilts night sometime.
