As to the question about colours, for me it was a "no brainer",
the red/black diced is sufficiently reminiscent of the MacGregor
Rob Roy tartan, to make it the obvious choice with a MacGregor
    kilt in a dress situation.

But definitely, it's a question of what you like and what you think
    looks good with your kilt.

Stoneyburnpiper If you are looking for a bespoke pair I would suggest going through the Scottish Tartan Museum I have a pair from them and they are wonderful. Here is the link.

Here is a photo of mine:

I do have another pair that are from the House of Cheviot in Red and White though the colour is more orange and I really prefer these.

Let's see how it is in the Army

All have the red diamond centred on the cuff.

Note that The Black Watch have one more diamond showing than the other regiments. (Well, the DM of The Highlanders has his a bit askew.)

Thing is, properly/traditionally made hosetops are form-fitted and have a seam at the back, just like proper full hose do. So there's no way to get them wrong as long as you have the seam in the middle of the back.

Unless you're like the guy on the left!!

(This is one of the most wonderful "play dress-up" photos I've come across; it deserves study.)

I'll have to check how my red and green hose tops are with the seem when I get home. When I enquired to the band as to why we wear the green in front I was told that's how the old pipe major wanted it.

Although I'm not military I want to do the uniform proudly and not look like a clown I do appreciate everyone's help!
