That would have been interesting. Richard. I'm one of those with feet-in-two-places: born in Canada, lived more than half my life in Scotland, now have homes in both places. One of those is up the road a ways from Jock, the other is apparently twelve hours to the west of you. I used to be back and forth four or five times a year, but recently much more at a go in BC.

Thanks, Richard. Superb! It will be good when we get the pic-posting problem straightened out; I think there are many members who would love to see these.

Just trying the one image, as "the Kid" is not home at present! If it works I'll add the others. :-)

That's odd, it sort of worked. Now, why it shows as a link rather than a photo I have no clue, but it is still better than how it was!
Will try the other pictures;1153-4-2014129171053_original Sm.jpg

    Fingers crossed!!

Being more 18th century than 21st, I haven't a clue why the above photos attached themselves in two different manners. Click on anything that looks 'clickable', and in time you should see about 5 different photos!

    Many thanks,
    Richard.

Thanks for the photos. That is a beautiful old piece, and quite a fascinating bit of history. I hope you can find out a bit more about it. If it could talk it would surely have some stories to tell!

Now that you've found a means to post the pics, Richard, I have taken the liberty of moving the thread to the Weapons as Kilt Accessories sub-forum.

    Thanks Rex.

I was in two minds where to post this thread, and as Heraldic devices were where the questions were, thought I had maybe hit the right spot.
Sorry it's a mess, my attachments that is!

    Douglas M,
    I'm pleased you like it.

It's looking like this pistol Must have been a personal pistol belonging to the Laird of Grant, as the furniture is not the type we normally see on livery arms for the staff.
The most likely candidate is Sir Ludovick Grant, 4th of Grant, Baronet. ( Born 13th Jan, 1707, Became Chief at his father's death in 1747, and died 18th March 1773.)
The pistol appears to have been made between 1745 and early 1760's.
If it Was made by James Lowe, he is last recorded as working in 1753.

There is a very thin chance it could have been made for his father, Sir James Grant of Pluscardine, 3rd Baronet of Grant, but it would have to have been made in the old boys last years, which seems hardly likely, as he gave charge of the clan to his son in the difficult times of the '45 rebellion, as he was well advanced in years.
The only other person it Could have belonged to and this is also very unlikely, is Ludovick's son, "The Good" Sir James, 5th of Grant, Baronet.
It could very well have belonged to him as a hand-me-down, but as he became Laird of Grant at his fathers death in 1773, that is beyond the time-frame when the pistol was made.
The Laird of Grant supported the Crown through both the '15 & '45 rebellions, though the cost of remaining loyal kept him busy most of his life thereafter paying off debts incurred!

I have quite a bit of information on the prime candidate for ownership. If anyone wishes, I can attach it here.

    Richard.

    She's a beauty!

I don't know how "into" guns you are, but please don't EVER try to refinish, polish, or otherwise restore or "improve" the pistol's appearance! Collector value is hugely dependant on original condition and patina. I see the ramrod is missing, do you have it?

    Cheers,
    Rick
