Just an amateur observation .
It would appear that the sett of the tartan on the seat , side panels and arms is a bit different than the tartan on the back .
On the seat , sides and arms the " red block " area is equally sized to the rest of the sett . On the back , the block area appears to be smaller than the rest of the sett .
I apologize if my terminology isn't quite right as I am certainly not an expert in this field .
Cheers , Mike

Some very good observations, especially picking up on some of the periferal clues. The bed shirt is not relevant to the main question, it's Royal Stewart.
Yes, the tartan is MacKintosh, somewhat faded, and yes, there are two settings. The back is a slightly smaller sett that the seat and arms. Here's the seat - thoughts?

I'm guessing the answer lies in the type of fabric used on the seat . ?

Perhaps a linen or heavy silken seat, from the slight puckering. When I enlarge the photo the weave looks more pronounced ( not sure how to express what I think I'm seeing).

Well, it`s a pretty well used old chair, and the seat and sides of the arms have been inexpertly recovered with what could be an old tablecloth or something, but beyond that I am clueless....???

I can't resist: more hints. The chair is early-Victorian from a set of 24 carved with the Mackintosh coat of arms. Originally they were in the dining room here:

The bed beside it, and its skirt, have stories of their own.

I'm not very well versed in the world of fabrics . Perhaps the seat fabric was once drapery material given the appearance of it's texture or a large table runner .

Going in the right direction but not quite.
