Tarheel, some of us in the great beyond (beyond the borders of the US, that is) do know what the names Mississippi and Missouri mean – in fact I believe I first read that in the National Geographic before I finished high school.
But there probably are a great number of folk around who don’t know what the Big Muddy is.

I never intend to discount the intelligence of others Mike. I like to offer the small detail of a local name such as the "big Muddy" to those that may not have heard of it. I even appear as a fool to ones in the know for my doing so rather often. I find I reach more ears with the small tidbits than have some get a "RCA dog with the phonograph" expression.
No harm, no foul.

Was in the park the day these then unknown guys showed up the first time, to play for free, and got booed .
