I hate to dredge up an old post, but maybe there are newer members who can shed light on this subject. I also have just purchased a Boru jacket, and cannot find the 'official' name of the chain. The closest I can find is 'closure chain'. However, searching for a closure chain online has proven fruitless. Does anyone have a closure chain for a Boru jacket? Or a better description that I can use while searching?

    Thanks,

    KL

They are called "Chain linked Buttons".

In the day when the style was developed, all buttons had two faces fastened together with a link. (refer to a picture of button down shoes and buttonhooks)

In the same time period gentlemen wore pocktwatches and fobs.

This is also the same time period when you fastened the front of your shirt with studs and the sleeves with cufflinks.

The chain linked buttons appeared on a few formal wear jackets. However these had an extra long link to show off the chain. (Kinda like a button and watchfob in one).

I'm thinking that I have seen photos or images from paintings in which these "linked buttons" were more-or-less commonly available "options" for the more formal Sherriffmuir and Montrose doublets/jackets. They seemed to bring an additional bit of flash to the doublet-with-jabot-shirt look. Am I in error?

Sorry I missed this thread the first time around!

There's only one name that I've ever heard them referred to, and that's "chatelain" button closures.

More ornate for women's apparel, they're usually just a strand for the men. It's not intended to be an "extender" for over-grown articles necessarily (although I DO suppose that would work quite well), but they're intended to accessorize the buttons, buckles, links and jewelry. It's all one, integrated silver or gold statement.

The chain for a pocket watch is called an "Albert" when worn across the front of a vest. No idea how I know that, bit like knowing that an elephant is the only animal that has four knees. Useless info until someone ask.
