I'm very particular about colours. I'm not a big fan of brown, so black all the way. But that's just me. Your mileage varies, and if you like them both, why not consider getting black AND brown? Maybe one now, one later or both at the same time.

It matters not one bit which colour, black or brown is down to personal preference, nothing more. Personally though and for what its worth, I am not keen on the light brown sporrans.

Short answer yes. Long answer whichever you prefer, or why choose? As for me since getting my Artificer sporran I have not worn another and it is brown, my father's old sporran which was my first is also brown. So for me a Brown day sporran is the way to go.

Both! I have both and find that the brown leathers match or contrast better with some outfits and the black others. As I have said before I also prefer to have all my leathers including foot wear matching.

I have a Culloden sporran and have a few bags for it of varying colours and textures. I have black, brown, suede, ray skin and smooth leather and change them as my mood or the need arises.

brown sporran, black shoes
Here are the dress regulations for the Royal Regt of Scotland. Both military non-ceremonial dress and barrack dress, the equivalents to civilian daywear call for black shoes, brown sporran and white or brown belt. I believe that this is fairly common for highland military units the world over, which is likely why brown military sporrans are often seen for sale on eBay.

Awesome sporran! I love Celtic animal design and artwork.
To answer the question I think it is down to what pleases you as the wearer.

Whilst military regulations are interesting we need to remember that we civilians are not bound by any regulations, although borrowing an idea or two from the military is fair game, should we choose. On the other hand, good taste is a useful guideline to follow, for civilians. What is more, it is entirely voluntary.

This sounds very interesting! How does this work? Is there a standard cantle, and various makers sell bags to fit that cantle? A quick google for Culloden sporran didn't show me much.

I use both black and brown, but wear brown 75% of the time. Why? It looks better with my tartan choice. But the real choice is my shoe color for the day. That determines my accessories.
