The Canadian Coast Gaurd and the US Coast Gaurd are two very differant things. The US Coast Gaurd is a Branch of the Armed Forces, where as the Canadian Coast Gaurd is more of a Love boat curise. We are in not and enforcment outfit, besides from Fisheries Enforcement. We do allot of science work, search and rescue, bouy tending and lighthouse resupply.
The US Coast Gaurd is made up of 10-20 year old people, where as the Canadian Coast Gaurd has allot of crew that are close to retierment.
Bottome line is up here the Coast Gaurd is a Federal marine job, not military. Yes we do risk life and limb sometimes, but we only do it when people are in jepordy, not for military purpose.
As for getting a job with the Coast Gaurd, you have to go to the main base 25 Huron st. in Victoria and apply. You will be added to the stack of many people who want to work with us. Oh ya you need some Marine Emergency Duties certificates as well to go to sea. And then you wait, and wait for them to call you.
