I hesitated to mention Filson or Orvis because someone unfamiliar with their products will probably suffer sticker shock. But you are right, their products wear like iron and are a lifetime purchase.

You guys have beat me to it, those are all great recommendations.

About the Orvis sticker shock, seems that they have great sales from time to time, helpful X-Markers usually posting about them. I think some of the handsomest vests I've seen with the kilt have been the Orvis ones.

And ditto some of the vests intended for Western Wear, which look like ordinary tweed vests from the mid 19th century to the early 20th.

I like having four roomy functional pockets.

This is my newest waistcoat, made by a co-worker. She snapped this photo at work Friday, the day she bought it in for me. (Those are the ugly blue pants I have to wear at work sometimes.) The fabric was salvaged from a vintage tweed jacket, hence the seams. Note the vertical buttonhole between buttons 5 and 6.

Though that vest will see plenty of kilt time, it's primary purpose is this

I ordered a vest from Steve. Top quality, excellent price. Steve, aka the Wizard, was even able to get an exact match of material for a jacket I had picked up in Scotland. Steve's service cannot be bettered.

excellent ideas ! I will check some of these places out ! I may even try my hand at making one. I don't know why I never thought of making myself one, seems a vest should be pretty easy to make.

Just to see what was available over there I had a look at Amazon.com and you're right there isn't a lot.
So I looked at Amazon.co.uk and there is a lot more.
So if you are looking for Ideas or maybe importing try searching Amazon.co.uk for "mens country waistcoat" and refine it to mens clothing and you'll see range of styles that may appeal.

By far a vest is about the easiest clothing item to make. Most patterns are pretty simple though some period styles can be more complicated. In general the pattens are very forgiving and you can adjust to the style you want. Here are a few of mine made from basic Simplicity/McCalls/Butterick patterns to some period patterns from Laughing Moon and other companies. Yes I like vests...

I found a company in the UK, though not for the vest but the Lancaster Swept Wing Collar shirt, that makes quite a few styles of vests. URL below for those interested. I got my shirt from the fairly quickly.

On the subject of making a vest most patterns don't show you how to make a usable welt pocket. What would you make a pocket for if not to use it. Here is a great video on how to make a welt pocket, I've used this method many times.
