    Thanks for all the feedback.

Thanks everyone. After studying XMTS, I really want something quite simple to wear for most occasions. I do like the one in my original picture because of the cross, the fact it is made by hand, and because it has no tassels. Still, I do feel something a bit simpler seems like a better choice. Given that, I would like to see what you think about tassels vs. no tassels. It appears that there are far more sporrans available with them.
    Thanks again

I like tassels. My go to is a brown and white calf skin with antiqued metal chains, bells (I think that's the correct term for the metal coverings on the top of the tassels), and cantle. I have found it to dress up nicely (up to back tie) and still look fine with just a shirt and tie or no tie with a sweater. I rarely go any lower than that on the formality scale with kilts.

I like tassels, myself, but I would pose this to think about: IF you like the look of them, and IF you are someone who would be likely to take gentle care of an item, go for it. However, as with all things with moving pieces, the more parts, the more chances of something happening to one of those pieces. For a sporran that would get heavy use ( such as a band sporran, or an "only" sporran) petals are another option.

Having worn a few band sporrans, including a nonfunctional horsehair version, one of my priorities is ease of access. I don't like fidly clasps or closures. I usually keep my photo ID ( beer tent!), Cash and cards, a pocket knife, my cell phone, and hemp and sometimes some extra electrical tape and beezwax ( for my pipes). Quite a bit for a glorified man-purse/ pocket. If you're getting in and out of the thing 50 times a day, "fidly" will get very old very quick.

I have two "working-man's" sporrans. One is brown, one is black neither is tasseled. I tend to rend things that dangle. I do like the bling and fashion of tassels, I'm just not gentle or as fluid with my motions.

Personally, I don't care for tassels. I don't like the sound of them when I walk, and I just find them a bit "busy". To be fair, I've not ever handled a sporran as fine as a McCrostie, and that may change my mind.

    Cheers,

My McRostie used to drum until about 10 years ago when it stopped all on its own. A wee, wee, wee small dab of weak glue on the tassel and gently placed against the sporran body solved the problem until then and needed only very occasional top ups of glue. There has been no ill effect to the wellbeing of the sporran.

I have both sporrans with tassels and sporrans without. My first sporran has them. Once I started Scottish Country Dancing I picked up a L&M sporran without tassels, what I found was that I missed the drumming of the tassels against the bag. Having said that to each their own.
