Most of my kilts fall between mid knee to the top of the knee cap. A couple of my kilts are the shorter "hipster" cut and if I cinch my belt too tight they ride up above the knee which makes me feel a bit silly. My workmans Utilikilt is cut longer and falls below the knee, which feels almost as strange to me as too short. I don't think it's a tradition thing with me though, it's just what feels right.

The top of the knee is "correct" but my kilt slips down to the bottom of the knee. I would prefer it above. I think it feels best, but I must admit it somehow does feel a bit exposed when it's at that height.

Graham, you are correct - mid to top of the knee is where it should be. When it gets to the bottom of the knee or lower, it starts to look like Granny's old dress. "Too long" is (and looks) just as bad as "too short".

BTW, whats the literal translation for "daggy"?? I know some ozzy-speak but that's a new one for me.

Blu, "daggy" means you look a bit of a "drongo", hope that clears it up for you

Anyway, I thought the question here was comfort not the correct length of a kilt!

There are different levels of comfort Graham. This is more of a mental comfort, not a physical one.

I'm uncomfortable when the length is incorrect.

You and me both Blu, but a lot of people are worried about flashing there bits to passing old ladies.

We may find that people that started out with Utilikilts (which always seem to be worn quite a bit longer than tartan kilts in my opinion) are more uncomfortable with the shorter length of a tartan kilt design.

I have always prefered the top of the knee length, and had one of my kilts brought up an inch because I thought it sat too low on the knee. But that's what I am comfortable with.

I wear my casual kilt at the top of my kneecap and my 9 yarder at mid knee, both feel right and to be honest I don't go to extreme measures concerning what others may or may not see. I'm not the one with the hangup.!
