Thanks, gentlemen, and happy listening.
Scottish smallpipes are wonderful instruments. Their size allows for a fair bit more expression in your phrasing than the Highland Pipes, which are really built for serious volume, outdoors. They cost a bit less than Highland pipes. If you're going to do Scottish music in a Scottish season, smallpipes are the ticket.
There's a Northumbrian smallpipe as well. I've never seen one, but I'm mighty curious to get a look at a set.
There's also an Irish variant on the Highland pipe, supposedly called the Irish War Pipe. I've never seen nor heard one. The mind boggles at the concept...or at least mine does, anyway.

Phil,
I just found out about this guy today. Techno/bagpipe music. Think BT with pipes! It's pretty darn good, and I think what you were looking for.

I heard "Wicked Train of Thought" this morning on the website's radio. The little soundclip doesn't do it justice.

Macumba...
Phil,
There is a group I like called Macumba that plays a mix of Scottish/Brazilian and Carribbean music -- steel drums wi' bagpipes DOES work, and very well! They do a rockin' version of "A Man's a Man for a' that!"
