This is in no way an official part of a US Navy uniform. It's just something that we sometimes wear for a squadron only event. The mess dress uniform is either a blue tux jacket or white. The blue is worsted wool. The white is polyester.
It really comes down to how much I'll wear it. I'm not Scottish, and I'm not sure what else I would wear a kilt to. Thoughts?

Unless the difference in cost is the biggest factor in your decision I'd say go with the wool every time, especially for a more formal type event.

I think you should get the 5 yard and then not worry about wearing it to something, just wear it. People I know show me pictures of themselves kilted but they apparently almost never actually wear their kilts for some reason. You don't need a reason to wear it, I wear one of mine almost every weekend because I enjoy wearing it and think it looks good ,and I'm not Scottish either (as far as I know).

Sett size and color
Also consider this: Sett Size.
The PV cloth is made with a finer/thinner thread than wool, so with the thread count the same, the overall sett size will be smaller on the PV.
Now, I do own both the semi-trade and a 5-yard from USAK... they're both nice garments. Just depends on the feel and the look you're after. I always tell people the semi-trade dresses up nicely, but wool is wool. It usually has more weight, a different "hand"/texture, and swings/swishes differently from the PV. If you're only wearing it in more dressed up occasions, I'd recommend the wool.
Looking at the USA Kilts website, it seems there is some significant difference in the colorations of the wool vs PV too. So that might sway you one way or there other, depending on your preferences. (Different mills use different dyes... Marton Mills vs. Strathmore)
You can't go wrong with either tho.

Just my $0.02, and it is going to back what a few others have already said, but from my perspective.
While the 8 yard kilt is amazing, I'm taking it out of my comments because you had.
Given the choice of the semi-traditional and the 5 yard wool, while I feel both are good choices (and I have both), I wear my 5 yard wool more often to formal or semi-formal events. While 99% of people won't know the difference, I feel I do and you probably will as well. Additionally, as something you plan to wear for years to come, the extra $100 now will be amortized over years, and become a few dollars every year you'll look back and appreciate having spent.

May I throw another couple of comments into the discussion.
First PV is washable, while I would suggest that you take a wool kilt to the dry cleaners.
Another possible option is for a 4-5 yd. box pleat kilt. The box pleat kilt is a very traditional or at least historic style. I know Rocky has made them in the past as have other kilt makers on the forum.
What ever choice you make it will not be a bad one.
