i had also a short barbour coming just to my pleats. but for next winter i was also thinking about a trench coming down right to my ankles. i can t imagine another possibility to fight against icy wind we have there. i would buy mine in black...
regarding that the cold wind is the problem much more then the temperature is, i will also cut my old dark blue duffle coat to pleat height, which is made of thick wool material. would look great i think...

ps: i ve posted my first pics ;)

Coats with kilts? Hmmmn, not easy. If you're not careful you might look as if you have forgotten to put your trousers on (to those who do not know you, that is!).

It's a known fact that our British winters are not as harsh as those experienced by many of us here, but I generally find that I am comfortable (and protected) enough with a good heavy leather bomber jacket. I have both black and brown to key in with boots, sporrans, belts, etc. and these are fine 95% of the time.

I too have a 3/4 length Barbour (sadly in need of re-waxing now) which keeps the wet off but is not warm enough for the really cold weather. My most effective combination in the wet is the aforementioned bomber topped with a waterproof nylon-based Inverness cape, which protects everything apart from the ankles and footwear.

If there is a downside with the Inverness Cape, it is in very windy weather when I tend to feel like a Nun having a bad hair day!!!

My thoughts were the same as Ham's. Being a new kilter and living up on the Colorado Plateau, where its always windy and does snow,I've been looking at what I already have available for the coming winter.

Turns out to be one of those big Aussie oilcloth drover coats, a civil war replica Union cavalry greatcoat from Grand Illusions, and a U.S. Navy bridge coat.

Wearing a kilt with the coats buttoned will I be mistaken for a lurking flasher? Wearing the coats unbuttoned to show I am fully dressed would be damn cold.

Maybe adding knee sox is the answer, makes sense in the cold weather.

I assumed that's what you'd be wearing. Unless of course, Graham is willing to loan you his green tights!

How I wish my heavy peacoat was six inches longer. It would be great for winter wear.

I'm thinking of making my own coat, after finding a great material at the fabric store. Does anyone know of a good pattern for a coat, or at least of any large photographs of a flattering kilt-friendly design?

this looks cool, I think I would leave the jacket open too, or else you would look like a flasher with no pants on
I also find that a nice sweatshirt of fleese under a leather does the job.and run like a bugger to the car.
walk in winter? not I !

I imagine the place you got the material would have patterns, that is if you got it from a fabric shop.
