The number one rule in picking a tartan is go with what you want. I normally go for non-clan related tartans myself. If you find a family history related tartan at some time, there is nothing that says you can only have one kilt. Many people have more then one. From what you listed about your search for a tartan that means something for you I would think these tartans could be a good starting point of tartans to look at:
U.S. 2001 Air Force https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=4179
US Air Force Reserve Pipe Band https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=4180
Washington State https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=4495
Duchess of Fife https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=1002
Fife (McGill) https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=1180
Fife (Mann) https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=1179
Fife, Duke Of https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=1182
Pride of Fife https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=3371
Lanarkshire https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=2039
Lanark (Fashion #1) https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=4975
X Marks the Scot https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...tails?ref=4790
Scottish Wildcat https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta...ails?ref=11196
If you don't like these tartans, there are thousands out there to choose from.

There is more than one Robertson tartan as well.

You know, I complete forgot this version of Robertson. HMHMH....huh....
Saw your name on a few other posts and was wondering, hey, I wonder where he might be from. Always interested in sharing the genealogical information I have as well.

I'm actually from Michigan, but I live in Lancashire in the UK. I am a kiltmaker here and trade under the name Arnott's of Ben Cree, mostly in support of local pipe bands.

Filter out the noise and just have fun with it.
As a side note, I am going through my own particular heck in filtering to get to four tartans from about thirty. I went with three so-called universals and one named that is significant to my family name's history. Part of my criteria was based on attaining variation of color across the entire collection I will end up with (6). I already have a Taylor woolly and the unofficial Air Force in synthetic.
As a wrestler I can relate, the anecdote for a half Nelson is to look away, reach behind your head and peel the offending hand off, post it, sit out and turn in. I agree, get outta there and turn inward for the answer, which ever your most passionate about will always be the right choice.

The USAF looks sharp, and probably easily obtained in heavy weight

Personally I really dig the wildcat tartan, simply gorgeous, but I understand there’s a bit of a waiting order.

My method in choosing a tartan was to look at the names in my family tree, and select the one that I most liked! I chose a Forbes Modern - partly because of appearance, but also because my family folklore looks on the Forbeses as being one of the more favourable [for want of a better word] branches of the family.
Don't "overthink" the issue - you have a free choice.
