    Conclusion

Thanks for the input, everyone. It seems sweater-vests and cardigans are not appropriate for a wedding, even a daytime wedding. So I'm going to keep trolling eBay for a daywear jacket or just go with a waistcoat only.

If it’s going to be hot I’d just go in shirtsleeves. People do that with slacks or suit trousers.

I'd say why not team the jacket up with a waistcoat, but keep the jacket off except for moments where you think it is appropriate? You could roll shirtsleeves neatly to reduce the heat factor?

I'm going to be the contrarian here - I have never thought of a vest in place of a jacket being appropriate. A vest to me, is something that goes under a jacket. Without the jacket, the assumption is that you've just taken it off.

    A supplementary thought:

Perhaps the best reason for a man to be seen in a vest without a jacket is for folks to see the tiny little woman beside him, shivering in his jacket that is four sizes too large for her.

But I think in this day & age where we are generally more relaxed about formal matters removing a jacket because we are hot is accepted. So as long as the jacket is to hand then few in this day & age will bat an eyelid... And even if is hung on the back of a nearby chair few will care...

I don't necessarily disagree. We're just talking about options for when a jacket isn't in the cards, but bare shirtsleeves aren't enough. Ideally, the jacket would be worn.

The satin lining on the back of a waistcoat isn't really meant to be outerwear, but a waistcoat can have other back material to give it a more presentable appearance.

Ask the bride. ignore everyone and anyone else. (except perhaps the mother of the bride) Do exactly what she says. She knows exactly what her wedding should look like, how everyone including the guest should dress, and everything else about her wedding.
