Anytime you get a properly tailored and finely crafted garment, it's worth its weight in gold [kilt or no].
I know that it might be an unpopular sentiment here, but a suit that's made to fit you makes you feel [and look] like a million bucks.
It's the same with a kilt, but I'm just saying that quality is quality.

I wear kilts to work every day. So I thankfully will never have this dilemma. 700cad is about 450-500us? Would buy a fine kilt but just a decent suit. I've been looking at sportcoats and such lately, the prices are pretty fresh in my mind.

Wow! A suit from Saville Row or a kilt... uh... Hmmm...
Well, I've got six kilts and one on order and no suits.
"I dress to the left."
Now you've got me thinking of "The Taylor of Panama" which is one of my favorite spy movies.
A spy gets bogus information that he knows is false but it's what his higher-ups want to hear. The information gets all the way up the chain and a war of liberation is declared.
It's silly.
Such a thing could never happen in real life.
Uh... what were we talking about again?

I have just two suits, a wetsuit and a drysuit, both for scubadiving. They are the only suits that interest me!

I think That we are forgeting that the kilt is just one piece. So it is Cheaper than a suit. Then you have to buy a jacket to go with it the kilt So I don't think the difference in the end would be that much.
You have to compare like for like. If you buy an Expensive tailored suit you'll be in many cases using it for something special. So to get a fair comparison of the prices you'll have to price the suit against ..say a formal day outfit .

suit...
The suit in question was a Saville Row.
OOH, OOH...I want one!
But of course, the suit should have:
1. a ticket pocket
2. side vents (not one vent straight up the back!)
3. If double-breasted, then a "two on six"
Cheers,
T.

David,
You are right one must have the accessories to go with the suit. Of course: shirt 150CAD, tie (if one wears one) 150CAD, belt?, socks?, shoes?
KILT!
