New Goat Hair Sporran on MoD Culloden Cantle!

This project has been a loooooong time in the making. I bought this MoD "Culloden" brass cantle about 5 years ago to go along with the one I already had built a brown leather bag for. I sent it to Artificer to get a bag built on it with a wavy goat hair front (along with a fox hide which he built into a beautiful sporran). There were some issues with the mohair colour I had originally wanted, which delayed the project while we figured out other options. Then his repetitive stress injury put the kibosh on his ability to continue working at the pace he had previously set. And then, well, I forgot about the project for a couple of years. But he and I have been in contact periodically over the last year or two while we discussed new options and details.

Long story short, this finally got finished and shipped out to me. I couldn't be happier with it.

Now, I know what you're thinking. Is it wookiee hair? Highland cow? Tina Turner wig? Nope, it's goat hair. Artificer had given me several options of hair-on hides that he had, and I picked this one. The root of the hair is dark brown to almost black, faded along its length to a rustic reddish-brown. I wanted it to look unruly and wild, and I think it came out nicely.

The bag itself is black, with a black liner just under the front of the cantle (pinked in traditional style).

Artificer says he's limping along through the rest of his backlog, but as far as I know he's still not taking any new orders.

That’s a beauty and worth the wait! You wear it well. Congratulations on what may be one of the last of Artificer’s fine sporrans.

    Damn you Tobus!
I’ve been thinking about a goat hair sporran for a while, now that I see you can get it in other than white, me want.
Seriously though Tobus that is exquisite. Job well done to both you and artificer
    Wear it with pride.

All I can say is wow! That is a fantastic sporran.

I'd love to see a pic showing the size of the interior.

    As usual, very stylish, Tobus.

Tobus , I love the sporran , always had an appreciation for goat hair sporrans of any color and the MOD cantle adds a special touch .

I also really like that kilt jacket as well , very sharp . Brown and tan jackets are very classic .

Thanks, Mike. That jacket is one of six vintage tweed kilt jackets I've acquired over the years from eBay. I love vintage tweed! I often tell myself I should move to a cooler climate so I can wear them year-round. I tend to gravitate towards earthy colours, and I rather tend to think that browns go with almost everything.

On the sporran colour debate, actually a vintage "dirty white" was my first choice when I started talking to Artificer about this project. I very much wanted an unruly Victorian-looking sporran built on a brass cantle. The project morphed into this one after a while, once he showed me some of the hides that I could choose from. When decision time came, I just couldn't get past the faded loveliness of the brown goat hair. But a dirty white long hair sporran is still on my wish list (probably with hair tassels), and one of these days I'll end up with one.
