Jock
Sometimes there is only so much that can be said on a subject, and only so much effect that can be prompted by it. Change will happen if it is destined to do so. If not, well, let Troon live with themselves and with the stain of the bad publicity. I have said my piece, and I will NOT go back under the current circumstances. "nuff said.

My thoughts exactly.

Actually I would say that simply challenging the status quo usually does absolutely nothing. Rubbing the status quo's nose in one's victory is generally what does the trick.

Never gonna happen. I think you missed how that attitude was expressed, though, and why...the mindset that produces that attitude is ingrained and pretty close to a source of national pride...sometimes it's deployed improperly, but this time I don't think it was. Our elected politicians make red tape, the rest of the country finds ways to cut it...his reaction was perfectly natural.

Be blunt more. I like blunt. Blunt overcomes stuffy, and this forum gets too damn stuffy, too damn often. It's easier to be blunt in a disagreement when people got thick skin anyway...there's no need to pussyfoot around.

Just wondering.
Yup. Called it back on page...I dunno, it was back at the beginning of the thread. Couldn't help but noticed you mentioned the British establishment, not the Scottish establishment . Troon's reaction was closer to what Monty Python always seemed to be lampooning.

I guess I fear that any further stirring of the pot beyond its current state would be misconstrued by some as more trouble from "that tenacious pain in the **** inconsiderate and bossy bull in a china shop American", while I am sure others would support further efforts with full furvor as it is a "cause" worthy of pursuing.
But as Wife has said a few times in the recent past, just exactly how much energy is it worth expending personally to try to change something that in the long run will not really mean that much to me and my future. Barring an apology and formal invitation back I will not return to Troon, and for me that is no great loss, and the same for them, probably. What has needed to be said has, and reinforced in a variety of ways and venues, and I think given a lot of people a lot to think about on a variety of different topics----Scottish heritage, golf protocol, Scottish-English relationships and desires, not the least. A lot has been said, resaid, and commented upon with a lot of various thoughts and variations as to reasons, backgrounds, personalities, nationalities, motives, etc... In various forums I have been called a hero, a gentleman, a crusader, a golf maniac, a crazy self-centered and inconsiderate "typical" bossy American, silly human being for wanting to even golf kilted. I can live with the compliments and criticisms and all the comments, pro and con, ridiculous or well-founded. And it appears that Troon can too. The light has been directly and brightly shone on the the practice of the club, and not a complimentary one at that. But really, in the end, just about everything that has needed to be said has been, and as Jock commented, the typical "British" approach of silence neglect has left us where we are, with a lot of fuss raised, some solid points made, but nothing really changed. As far as we know.
Maybe the next guy who shows up at Troon kilted and desiring to play a round of golf will be treated differently, and allowed to play. I would commend both he and the club were that to be the case. Maybe more clubs around Scotland will revisit their own dress codes in light of the negative publicity Troon has recieved. Maybe more golfers will try golfing kilted and come to enjoy it s much as I. Maybe it will stimulate only a few more people to purchase and wear the kilt more frequently. I would look at any one of those as a triumph of sorts, and then consider the efforts expended thus far in this endeavor and the "fuss and ruckus" raised to have then indeed brought some new and positive value to the world. Even if only a little bit, made the place better for all of us.
Just my (maybe final on the subject) tuppence.

As the Vicar used to intone sadly while listening to my boyhood attempts at choral improvement, "even dripping water eventually wears away stone." To expect a total surrender on the part of Troon would have been to misread the British character but I think you did your bit, and well, Forrestermodern. For what it's worth.
