    Day 9 – Arichonan Village

This day was to be depressing. We left the ruins of Poltalloch House and drove to the ruins of the Arichonan Village. I did not see any historic signs for it. The walk up the hill was maintained, though. This village was ‘cleared’ in 1848 from the Malcolm’s estate. The villagers had refused the offer to relocate and eviction was enforced by the local authorities. The villagers didn’t go peacefully which resulted in some of the nearly 100 ‘rioters’ being jailed. Here is a link on the Arichonan Clearances.

We parked the car in parking lot off the main road and walked up a steep trail. We were rewarded wit beautiful views of Loch Sween.

We came to the ruins of the village. It was high on the hill where the village lay.

    Day 9 – Arichonan Village

This was one of the largest homes and highest on the high. Chris believed it to be home of ‘head’ man of the village. After all, ‘everything runs downhill!

Just to think over 165 years and this large cast iron pot remained! I can recall from youth visiting my Dad’s mother ancestral family farm in Southampton County, VA there was a similar pot there. I was told by my Great grandmother Taylor that it was used to wash clothes every Monday. (Sorry, Chris we may be related. Family history says our Virginia family was from two Taylor brothers who emigrated from England in the 18th century.)

Chris finds the remains of a bed frame.

The village laird would have one heck of a view each morning when he came out his front door!

Another pot, much smaller; a cooking pot for porridge perhaps?

I just can’t believe it’s still here! These things left behind make me believe there was some haste in leaving, as it would have been if forcibly evicted.

    Day 9 – Arichonan Village

I’m wearing my tank, Ancient Malcolm tartan with the ancient red garters from Redshanks I purchased in Inveraray at my arrival.

We wonder how old this plant may be?

    No introduction needed here.

    Day 9 – Arichonan Village

I recalled a converstion with Chief Robin when Donald McCallum and I visited him in Duntrune Castle in 2003. Chief Robin spoke of the bay of sorrows near Duntrune where the Highlanders where shipped from Scotland during the clearances. He said the intelligent ones were sent to America and the not so to Jamaica. The Malcolms had sugar plantations for 100s of years in Jamaica. Perhaps it was the rebellious ones that got shipped to America and the more docile to the Jamaica plantations.

We had time to grab lunch before our tour of Duntrune. We headed for Crinan. I had no stomach for food, but a pint was in order. More to come of this day.

Such beautiful photos Mael, nice job. And the thought of the tragic history of this area puts into mind as an apt description the saying "a terrible beauty".
