Hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes, but I started playing around with the colors on the message board this morning after I had that idea, and put a proto-design in my gallery.

Notice the main feature is a broad white "X" on a dark blue background. And the other design elements incorporate grey and yellow, as I said. The azure is purely for aesthetics.

Looks good, but I'd like to see what Cyndi comes up with before saying let's run with it.

As it happens, the tartan I designed for my own family, the Traills, has the Olympic colours! I never realised it before. You can see it at http://www.tartansauthority.com/web/...r=By+Tartan+No. (The blue is not quite right in the image, however.) I always get loads of compliments on this tartan, so I don't think it's generally regarded as being hideous!

Truthfully, almost any combination of colours can be made attractive by a good tartan designer. I made one for a company in Scotland using their corporate colours of red, orange, purple, green, mustard, and black. The tartan they selected from the choices I gave them is a bit garish, for my taste, but they get compliments on it, too! (See it at http://www.tartansauthority.com/web/...rtan=By+Tartan) Again, the colours are a little off -- the orange should contrast more with the red.

Another tartan I designed using colours from a flag (plus a couple of shades of blue) is the Maryland State Tartan. See it at http://www.tartansauthority.com/web/...rtan=By+Tartan. I have also used the colours from coats of arms as inspiration for the design of a tartan.

Matt, that looks great. I don't see how I could improve on it. I like the idea of using the colours from the board, too -- it's our 'milieu', you might say. I vote for adoption of Matt's design!

The azure relates to Hank's Highland Tide logo, which is very appropriate, since Hank is the founder of the forum.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Matt that is a great looking design! Cyndi I actually like the corp. design better than the MD tartan. Colors just seem to blend better but that's MY eye. All of them look good.

You're so right about beauty being in the eye of the beholder! Thanks for the compliment!

When we registered that Tribal corporate tartan, the director of the Scottish Tartans Authority said that all my designs are stunning, but that one is stunning in 'a different way' and he nearly was blinded when he opened the letter with the sample enclosed!

I wholeheartedly support the idea of an X tartan. However we do need to be careful about using heraldic symbols. There are laws about ths sort of thing in the UK and we must be careful not to break them.

I like Matt's design, but I'd like to see one with the five olympic colours. Or anything else - for comparison purposes. The problem I see with using our 'milieu' is that such might change with new software of whatever. Years from now people might ask, why those colours? and all we'll be able to say is that they were once the colours of the xmarks site, but no longer.
