I think thats what pisses me off. This is a member driven 'thing' to help another member... and because of the litigious society we live in, Mike HAD to make that comment. THAT pisses me off more than the fact he did. It disgusts me that some community members want to get together and help out a friend in need, and the website it's done on needs to post a legal disclaimer to indemnify themselves.
"Opinions expressed here are not necessarily..." is one thing. "We don't officially support this" is another.
Its nothing against Xmarks iteself... just my disgust at the 'need' to say that.

Personally I think everyone is getting a little over-sensitive here. Don't forget the purpose of this thread is to generate help for our friend not discuss the pros and cons of "sponsership"

Mike
works for me, has anybody checked out my previous post? I'd hate to be part of the cause of more trouble for Dread.

This is not and was never intended to be organized, or representing XMarkstheScot.Com as a business or website. It is all about whether or not this is a "Kilted Community" or just another website.
If it is a community, members should help members in need of help. And I'm happy to say that over a dozen people have contacted me to get Dread's mailing address. None of them were part of the XMarks Administration so far, it has been the ordinary members, many of them very recent members, who have stepped up to help a friend in need. And I'm proud to say that some of the donors have been Brother Masons.

True enough but I think the point is for the people who might see it as something else. Sad that we live in a CYA world like that, but it could get X-Marks in trouble if the word charity was thrown around with their name. Especially after natural disasters the goverment cracks down on fraud charities. Basically it was said for those lawyers chomping at the bit to bring a lawsuit. But I think it is a fine idea and my message has been sent.

There are time when you need to put aside beaurocracy, and get on with the job of helping, I brought up paypal becasue it automatically comverts UK pounds to Dollars, If I write a cheque it will be in UK pounds and dread will have to convert it (normally banks charge for this).

Daz,
I know the check would be good, but I believe that a money order would be less trouble for Dread.
I'm not sure, but I think at least some banks offer money orders made out in currencies other than that of the country where they are purchased.
Here in the states, a check deposited is often not credited until it clears the bank of the issuer. This could be anything from 48 hours to five business days. I don't think that a money order incurrs this waiting period.

LordDamax, I am sorry that the dislaimer had to be made, too. But, that's the life we live, eh?
I know that many of you think this is a place to come and shoot the breeze and vent frustrations and offer support. But the fact remains that operating a forum is much more than that. Our Webbie/Admin has several legal responsibilities that he has to meet. And like 'em or not, he has to meet them. And like it or not, you and I are responsible for helping him do that.
If you want to know the truth, the CYA stuff chaps my tail, too. And Todd's. And David's. And Nelson's. And Rufus'. If you have some spare time, you can log in here and check out the threads that attract your interest, ignoring the subjects that don't. We don't get that luxury. We get to read every post of every thread, to make sure that the forum rules are being observed. It would be nice for us to be able to be more involved in some of the threads, but we get to spend our time with making sure that the lines are not getting crossed.
And then, we get the "enjoyment" (yeah, that WAS sarcasm) of watching people spit out the dummy when they are reined in.
I hope this will explain why the disclaimer was made. If it hurt anyone's feelings, I am sorry about that. I also hope it will explain a bit about how the forum staff feels about some of the recent issues that seem to have cropped up. The Admin asked us to come on board to help him make sure that everything ran according to the rules he had established. We're just doing our job.

There's also the possibility that the various groups (S/S, charities, etc) may be able to monitor Dread's bank account. They'd know if any cheques or money orders were processed. I sent cash. No need to declare that.

My wife works for the state government as an Enforcement Officer in Domestic Relations. These guys DEFINITLY have the ability to monitor ANY transaction that is made through his bank account, even up to cashing checks, etc. They can get more info on you than you can imagine. Many a dead beat Dad/Mom has tried to run or hide income, etc., and she always finds their money.
I would suggest that gift certificates or WalMart type gift cards, or cash would be more appropriate. Anything he has to sign, or show ID for can and probably will be traced.
