I am a Scot--as I have stated in the past, I have no problems with anyone wearing the kilt. I think it is great that people all over the world want to wear the kilt. I admit to being a traditionalist, but if anyone wants to wear other types of kilt -good on them

Just because you don't have a Scottish heritage doesn't mean you can't wear a tartan kilt. Don't want to wear a Scottish or Irish tartan. No problem. Take a look at the American National tartan (made by the House of Edgar):

I've had a couple negative repsonses towards my kilt, but they were the exception, and not a single one of them was from scotland in any capacity.

One of the first questions most people ask is, "Are you Scottish?" Not that it matters, but I am, and I'm not. I'm proudly muttish. My mother's side is mostly English, Scottish and Irish, with some Danish thrown in for good measure. My father's side is mostly German and English, so I have a German last name.

Recently an older woman made my day recently when she started asking about my kilt. I was wearing my Black Watch and it turned out it was her family's tartan. She moved with her family from scotland when she was very young but she remebered the men wearing kilts to church and the like. She asked me why I picked that tartan and I told her it was because I liked the look of it and I hadn't known my clan affiliation at the time. We discussed my family history a little bit and I think I might've made her day as well.

I took a look at that web site and they feature a Swedish tartan which is exactly what I was looking for, includes the colors of the Swedish flag (which you would have seen if you have ever been to IKEA )

So....when I have the money I can check that out - I think that's a handsome tartan although the American one is really nice as well. I like a tartan with some bright colors, I think the black watch is a little too dark for me.

Oh....are there any other companies besides Utilikilts that include pockets and will any of them do a custom tartan?

Okay, these are the ones I really like:

    Swedish
    American
    Illinois

And I feel fine wearing any of those. I could also wear the Chicago tartan but it has so much PURPLE in it that I just don't know. It was originated from Chicago by William Rainey Harper and I was born and grew up in Chicago and went to William Rainey Harper College so there you go.....but all that PURPLE!!

Oh....and where is the German tartan? What happened to them?

    Bill,

My Battle Axe is right there with me. You just can't see her because she was taking the photo.

The Swedish tartan might be a custom weave job (which isn't going to be cheap) as I couldn't find it on any regular production listing.

I have a sample swatch of the American National tartan and the blue is actually darker than on the electronic swatch. The white and red stripes do brighten the tartan up a bit though.

Hector Russell makes a casual tartan kilt with pockets called the Hillwalker. It sells for around $508.

The German National tartan is listed here:

    The German National tartan:

I had Matt make me one of his box-pleated kilts in this tartan to honor my German ancestors (I'm a least a full quarter German).

Many district tartans are listed here:

I'm half German so I've got you beat.

However, now that I see some tartans that I like and could wear I don't think I will be exploring that side of things. With my financial situation I will stick to Utilikilts. If I had to spend hundreds of dollars for a kilt I would be afraid to wear it for fear I might ruin it or something - I would want it to last a lifetime. Heaven forbid I should accidentally close it in a car door!
