The week we spent in Scotland in Sept I was kilted the whole time, either my UK or a traditional kilt. I had two women at a tea shop say they appreciated a man with enough sense to wear a kilt. Another few merely stated the kilt looked good in passing. The only others I saw kilted were P1M and some guys at a train station dressed for a wedding. Otherwise, nobody seemed to pay much attention. Wear your kilt and enjoy it.

I had this exact question last week at a local convience store. The question caused several folks around me to stop what they were doing to hear the answer. (kind of reminded of the old EF Hutton commercials ) My answer, 'I am over 40, 6 foot 2 250 pounds.... I wear it because I WANT TO'. One of the guys near me almost dropped his coffee when he heard that.

Another good one. Pants are like cheap motels, no ballroom. And I love to dance! Works every time.

This was orriginally posted by Robin
I added a little to it
there are a lot of good replies in this:
The power of the kilt...
The kilt itself is beautiful and comfortable.
Proudly wearing the kilt honors your heritage .
Those wearing it know more about who they are and are not afraid of being themselves.
Those who wear it show the world they're individuals...not afraid of what others think of them.
Kilt wearers are fiercely independent, make their own decisions based on something more important than current fashion and societal expectations, and often make our own gear.
It makes perfect sense that the English banned the tartan after Culloden....a guy wearing a kilt is a rebel and potentially dangerous.
A day kilted can be a life changing experience.
The kilt is a recognizable trademark of both a gentleman and a warrior.
Thank you Robin

I don't explain why I wear a kilt at all. I really don't think much about it, it's just normal to strap on a kilt when I get dressed and when asked why by anyone I just give them a puzzled look, shake my head and walk on. I admit I used to make with the cutesy comments and such, but, honestly, I really don't have time to waste on it. When I'm out and about I'm generally out for a specific reason and feel no need to cater to someone elses silliness. So I'm a curmudgeon, I simply don't find it entertaining anymore. An honest inquiry will get an answer but all the nonsense gets a disgusted look and a shake of the head.

I've come up with a standard answer that seems to satisfy most people even though it really doesn't make any sense. Take for example this interaction that happened a couple of days ago at the grocery store
Them: Why are you wearing a kilt?
Me: My wife and I do Scottish Country dancing
Them: Oh! Well OK then.
I am now imagining myself in a black unitard and white hose wearing ballet slippers and standing in the same line at the same grocery store.
Them: Why are you wearing that outfit?
Me: I'm a Ballet dancer
Them: Oh! Well OK then.
See it doesn't really make any sense. I'm certainly not standing in second position and no more ready to cast off and strayspey down the produce aisle than I would strike an arabesque and then fondu' by the pickle endcap. My thought is that it just gives some context for the outfit*.
Cheers
* Or maybe they think that Scottish Country Dancers have to be prepared 24/7 to Pousette and do Rights and Lefts in case of some National emergency.

Why do I wear the kilt?
"Because I can"
"It's part of my heritage"
"It's comfy"
my favorite answer
"I got balls like a Rhino"
