Ummmm... Mike, I hate to be a pain, but it looks like the calendar is a "Personal Calendar" and not a "Group Calendar". No one can see the events I posted but me. I can't see events that OTHERS have posted.
The "Personal Calendar" kind of defeats the purpose I talked about in this thread. Is there any way to fix it's functionality?
Again... thanks to the mods (especially Mike1) for being so helpful and responsive with this.

No problem Rocky. Take a look and see if things are working properly now.
I exchanged a bit of communication with Rocky about the calendar function, yesterday. The developers of this software suggest the calendar is the least-used function in the entire package and I'm betting they are spot on. I own two vBulletin licenses of my own, help Highlandtide with this one and The Pub and moderate and handful of others and had never even looked at the calendar parameters before setting up the new one on here.
"Calendar? What calendar? You mean to say there is a calendar?!?"

It is a good idea, thanks for bringing it up.

I agree with Mike1 that the post count has gotten too competitive, just in the short time I've been a member. I like the idea of ranking, however, but it really should be based on substantive contributions to the kilt-wearing knowledge base or services provided to the community. This would move the competition-minded to share more useful ahoughts and ideas, such as AlanH and the X-Kilt contributions, Nick's kilt-wearing tutorial, concrete assistance theat benefits all members. It might even rduce the number of one-liner "I like it too" posts.
I don't know how rankings and promotions would be determined. Possibly the Mods would consider nominations on a monthly basis, those nominations being provided by members (not themselves, of course) with a short write-up of the reasons for the nomination. Not to pile more work on the Mods, but if the total post counts is substantially reduced and the value of individual posts enhanced, they might have more time to do this sort of thing.
We could keep track of total posts, but if the rankings are based on substantive contributions then people would still get an idea of the knowledge base from which an individual is posting.

I am going to stay out of the post count thing, except to say that if people were to follow the rules used for on-line classes I have taken (only post a substantive comment, ask a question, or make a point, no "I agree" posts), the post counts would not climb nearly so fast.
I do not agree that the Mods should make the decision on a person's ranking. Nor do I agree that the number of posts a person has made give them any real knowledge. Certainly Hamish, Graham, and Riverkilt bring experience and wisdom in the wearing of kilts, but what about the knowledge that somebody like kiltykiltycauldbum can bring to the kilt making users? Or Steve himself, a member since 2004 and with only 800+ posts?
If we want to have rankings, how about ranks based on the quality of posts? Every thread can be given a rank by those reading and responding. Perhaps that is a better approach. And it does not require the mods to take on ore work. Mike1 will have to let us know if it is possible, but I think it is.
And for Steve, upgrade to Firefox 2.0, it includes just the spell checker you are wanting. It red underlines misspelled words on any page on any website, and you can right click to get the appropriate spelling.
OK, done with my rant.

When I ask for advice or weigh opinions, forum rank is actually not real high on my list of criteria. I look at usefulness of info, and corroboration of others. To me, forum ranks are just a fun byproduct of an active board. I mean, yeah, I thought it was neat when I hit Reg, then Samurai, then Warrior, but to me it really doesn't have a bleeding thing to do with why I'm here, and I don't think I'd be crying if it went away. I'll be real honest here, I hardly ever look at the celebration board unless my name pops up on it. I think the idea of a weekly acknowledgment of forum rank increases would be sufficient.
I am glad to see that the OT stuff doesn't count towards forum rank though. I'd hate to think that I only made warrior because of the song game, even though I don't take the forum ranks that seriously.

Well said.
And I for one have no intention of reading posts and ranking them for quality. This is a fun and informative forum and lets keep it that way.
