I too am from the South. Born in the Old Dominion and raised in it, SC, and Maryland. Also spent two years in a wheel chair with a vascular disorder in the 5th and 6th grade. My sugestion - never stop laughing at yourself. If we take ourselves too seriously, then that is when the trouble starts.
When people make fun of my accent, I ask them of what accent are they speaking. When they ask about my kilt, I tell them everything they want to know, and probably more.

when a friend of mine went to the British Isles with his family,
people kept telling him that they thought the way we Canadians speak
was very "cool".
"it's so slow and relaxed, it's like you stop to think between each word."
