Well, it did take a bit of sanding to get it all smoothed down. Started with 60, then 120 and finished off at about 180/200. All total it took about an hour to hour and a half from blank to ready to finish. One of these days I'll have an extra $250 for the lathe. WAIT, that will get me another kilt!!
Would I do it again the same way? No. Would I finish it the same way? No. Would the results be similar? Yes but I'd burnish it instead of varnish. That particular wood just doesn't like to have a sealer on it.

Thank you.
The ebony ones on the drawing board will just be one piece, the handle and sheath, no blade. I might be talked out of the second one if they both work out right.

I might be of some assistance. My father owns a Woodcraft store (www.woodcraft.com) and at my house he has a full shop (band saw, table saw, wood lathe, metal lathe, chop saw, large woodworking workbenches, and the like).
I went metal, I have made blades before. the thing with a sgian is you cannot turn it on a lathe (as far as I can tell) because it is more of an oval shape. you might rough it on a lathe but a band saw or scroll saw would be my preference. you might be able to get it to work if you do it on a lathe and offset it, but that is a PAIN in the back side!
as far as finishing, like I said I went metal, but I can get the answers you are looking for, I do work for my father on weekends. ;)
I think that Saturday's forecast hold a scroll saw demo on making a sgian? I will let you know how it goes. hehehe.
and if anyone ever has a woodworking question, PM or email me, I read email/PM almost hourly...
