Growing up in England in the late sixties, early seventies I'd watch Dr Who faithfully. For me Tom Baker was the one and only Dr. Who!

When did Tom Baker "bomb" in the States? It's certainly a be-hitch that any actor ever gets type-cast...really unfair...I 've read interviews with the Who's and they all seem to regret the type-casting but have no regrets about having been the Doctor. I was a a Who-Con a long time ago and Tom Baker showed up...worshipful fans as far as the eye could see...I even got an old Who fan friend of mine to watch Monarch by teling her that Tom Baker was a regular on it.

Tom Baker made an attempt at cracking the US market in the mid to late 1980's.
he got cast in a few bit parts as a villains "THUG" think it might have been on Miami Vice or maybe Simon & Simon, but his UK fame didn't follow him to America and soon he just Disappeared over here.
it's so sad, he really is a great actor.

You beat me to it. If I recall correctly, wasn't he a companion of the second doctor?

Tom Baker does make a great villain, he is the evil wizard in "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad" . Even though effects-wise it isn't the best of the Ray Harryhaussen movies (though the Kali statue sequence is brilliant) it does in my opinion have a great cast and story. I always thought that Tom Baker as Prince Koura was a wonderful villain and a great foil for John Phillip Law.

He also played Rasputin in "Nicholas and Alexandra".
