Hey, I'll take being seen as crazy/tough over being seen as an object of derision any day.

I got the same reaction from a huge guy in a USMC T-shirt.

I told him "I'm not the baddest guy on the planet--- but the guy who is calls me every morning to make sure we're still friends..."

Then he found out it was the "Leatherneck" tartan from SportKilt.

He said he just might get one himself.

    I bought him a beer.

Yeah, I get it a lot but I thought it was because of the bald head, goatee and a few tattoos?

I wonder if is simply the manifestation of the self confidence it takes to wear a kilt.

I've sensed the "don't mess with a kilted man" before. Of course I would never mess with a kiltie, what if he knocked me down and I accidentally looked up ? That would be the last thing I would want to see as my life ended!

The biggest and baddest actors usually aren't. The most capable and most dangerous people are always the most polite and amiable folks around, they have nothing to prove but the guy who goes out of his way to look scary is usually trying to cover up something and putting on a bluff.

Talk to a US Army Ranger and you'll find a very nice person who knows what it's all about and doesn't put on some big show. And ah, you Marines out there...The US Army Ranger school trains your Force Recon Marines, so get over it...LOL!

Methinks you're delving into a whole different aspect. I've yet to meet a kilted man who was trying to "act" tough. It's all about being confident. It's like Gene Simons from Kiss said in an interview on NPR. "I may not be the best looking or the smartest guy in the room, but I'm going to be the one leaving with your girlfriend because I'm confident."

You have to hold your head a little bit higher when you wear a kilt, if you do, people see your confidence and realize that you're "tough enough" to wear a kilt and look like there is nothing wrong, so you must be a tough guy. I look kinda scary with no hair and a decent build, but most of the time I'm smiling, so it doesn't matter.

Don't get me wrong, I was talking about males in general and wasn't necessarily refering to kilt wearing. I have no idea why but when males hit their early twenties they start this "I'm so very much tougher that the next guy" attitude, most grow out of it but some don't, they carry that attitude with them until they're grumpy little old men and feel that they have to challenge every other man over something as simple as what they're wearing, in this case the kilt.

These mixed up people can be found all over the world and generally these insults come from some poor, timid spirit who's showing a lot of false bravado who has never in his life been in a position where his mettle was tested and forged and at heart is just a girly-dude. More often than not their own clothing wears THEM and not the other way around.

The Supreme Canuck is absolutely correct in saying that these folks should just be laughed off and just walk away from them.

And as to what ccga3359 said about being knocked down and getting a sneak peek under the kilt, why then THAT is the time that you point and start laughing hysterically. If that doesn't take the wind out of your opponent's sails nothing will...LOL!

Actually, that's just one school Recon Marines go to. We like to diversify...
