I have one of those waiting for me in the shop, if I ever get the time. It seems like a really nice blade, but I'm not an expert by any stretch.

I'm no metal expert but the folks I know that have bought the Atlanta Cutlery blades say that they do not keep an edge well.

Personally, if I'm going to buy a knife like this I want the best steel so I'm not sharpening it every day.

I love the Damascus look but would love to have that with a bottle opener.

I also really like something like this without the crest

take a look at this site
    http://www.sheffieldknives.co.uk/aca...sh_Knives.html
They don't list them but if you ask They will sell just the sgian blade
they have them in high carbon as well as stainless
I've dealt with them twice and they are good people to deal with
I got 10 high carbon sgian blades last year from them for $10.00 apiece

this what they look like after I put handles on them

Joe, those are really nice. Is that last one the one you showed me in Park City? I seem to remember the sheath.

There are forged carbon steel sheffield blanks in a new Aussie catalogue I got today, going for $18AU each. I'm going to buy a couple anyway, so will post quality when I see them in the flesh, if you're interested. They do look OK in the pics though

The Sheffield knife company are off on holiday, I'll ask them about their carbon steel blades as soon as they're back.

I can't say I'm all that impressed with the tiny tangs on the top two blades in that picture. The bottom blade has a relatively beefy tang with good rounded shoulders, though. I know that a sgian dubh will probably not be put under a lot of stress even if it's used for general day to day cutting chores but I'd still want mine to have something more substantial than a rat tail tang. Just my $0.02

    Hi,

That's a valid concern, but in practice they hold up very well. I embed the last part of the blade into the handle which adds considerable strength to what could be the weak point.
When I make my own blades I design them with tapering shoulders between blade and tang and taper the tang as well.
One advantage of a relatively small stick tang is that it helps keep the balance of the Sgian Dubh low down which keeps it steadier in the sock.
