And this train of thought doesn't need to be explored very much, keep the mods happy.
Well, given the fact that I live in sweden... the likelyhood of him being aware of the History behind the Black Watch and their expoits, let alone being able to recognice the tartan as Black Watch modern.... Well lets just say that it's highly unlikely.
Or... the guy was rude and staring.
That's my guess.

Not necessarily; the Pipes & Drums of the Swedish 1st Engineer Regiment wear the Black Watch tartan:

Highlander1,
Welcome to the rabble. Yes, wear the black one if that is what you have. Be sure to post a pic if you do. San Diego should be breezy enough to keep you cool. Take care.

I was in the bookstore the other day (yes, that bookstore, and no, she wasn't there) wearing my new kahki AmeriKilt. Three girls, about 12 years old, were there as well.
G1: Look at that guy.
G2: Which... oh. He's wearing a kilt, like my dad has.
G3: Oh, like in that one movie.
I moved out of earshot, then, so I don't know what "that one movie" was, but the whole conversation amused me.

Mr. MacDougall,
one cool thing about that trip was, no wait, two, yes two cool things about that,,,,no wait, three, yess, three...well, you get the Python, i mean picture...
was that even the 12 year old girls know it's a kilt;
that at least one other guy in Phoenix has a kilt;
that they have seen and remember Braveheart or another kiltflick and, lastly, that you are still hanging around bookstores...
Keep on Kiltin' (insert kilted Grateful Dead "truckin'" smilie here, when someone, not I, figures out how to make one) (Broad Hint!)
Frumiously smilin'

If the movie those 12 year old girls saw was "Braveheart" then they did get an education in the wearing of kilts...
