In general - I love "Ancient" tartans first and "Weathered" tartans second. I am also very partial to Isle of Sky (which I own) and Dutch Friendship (Which I don't). I have a slew of "District" and "Irish County" tartans which are wonderful - and My "Ancient" Caledonia seems to be getting a lot of air play these days...
Ah, so many tartans, so little time...

Of the tartans I actually own, I am partial to the Weathered MacKenzie. Of tartans I don't own, I like Isle of Skye.

There are a lot of tartans I really like.
MacBeth Ancient (my avatar)
Black Stewart (probably my next kilt)

I have several favourites, but the Maple Leaf tartan continues to be a favourite (yet I still don't own one )
Others include
Wood
MacKenzie Weathered
Nova Scotia
Xmarks
Holyrood
and most weathered or muted tartans

no favorites
I have no favorite tartan. I wear them for their appropriateness for the event. I do not wear them for their color or design, but for what they represent. If they do not represent anything relevant, they are meaningless.

Well, I have to add the xmarks tartan as one of my favorites. My favorite color is blue and the xmarks tartan is one of the most beautiful tartans I've seen.
But, as many have pointed out, it's hard to pick a single favorite from all the available tartans.

I would also like to add shadow tartans to my list. Sort've like a crossover tartan.

Well, there are WAY to many nice ones to name.
I am fortunate, as several of the pretty, yet simple ones HAPPEN to be family tartans for me. Namely:
Wallace (by Wallace)
MacNeil (by Neel)
MacGregor (if what a cousin tells me is correct-> by Grier)
MacLeod of Lewis/Loud MacLeod (by marriage-> through the Lewis family)
Also, my favorite variation of Black Watch is ALSO a family tartan:
Gordon (through Todd)
Otherwise, I like:
Carolina (looks good with SO much)
Caledonia (similar, but different than Carolina- esp in the ones I have)
X Marks (GREAT blues, plus works well with the "Blueland" Thrashers jersey)
Clergy (subtle, but DARK beauty)
Black Watch (always nice)
Also, several ones "in the works"
Brotherhood of the Kilt (really nice dark one)
MacBubba (several beauties, from what I understand)
Wages/MacWage (in my beady little brain)
Plus, several more that I just ADORE. I could go on and on and on.
However, one of the "family tartans" that is almost universally DISLIKED:
Wilson
