I've never worn tartan flashes, only solid colors. Typically, my kilt hose match (or at least compliment) the primary color of my tartan, with the hose matching the primary stripe. With my saffron kilt I wear green hose with saffron flashes, the hose matching my brat & caubeen.
    Works for me; YMMV.

I started this thread out of curiosity, and I want to thank everyone for participating! Looks like solid color flashes are winning, and I expect that the most common solid color is red.

Personally, I wear both tartan and solid colors depending on the rest of my clothes. I don't have matching tartan flashes for all my kilts, but I wish I did. If I have the matching tartan flash, I tend to wear it, but not always. For instance, as I sit here typing, I have a on a black knit golf style shirt, and black hose with solid red flashes. I'm wearing the hunting stewart, and I have matching tartan flashes, but I like the way the red flashes brighten up the dark ensemble.

I have yet to get the strap style, and will look into getting or making some soon. I still have doubts that they will work with my large (fat) calves (cows)and hose. But, I haven't tried them yet. I should also say, that the price factor enters in here. They seem costly, just for a set of flashes. Of course, that can be said for most of the things that we need to buy when we choose to go kilted.

    Again, thanks for your participation!

Mostly, the black ones I whipped up from some grosgrain ribbon.

Beertigger - You're my kind of person. Not that you wear black flashes, but that you made them yourself! Very Scottish of you!

My wife tells me the Scottish and Dutch in me is readily apparent.

Half my flashes are tartan half are solid color, but by virtue of what kilts i wear most, i tend to wear the tartan flashes more often, because I only get tartan flashes for kilts which I wear alot =D
