There is at least one other nursing student active on here (though probably several more), Mr. McDougall of Ariz. Ask his advice about the pin!
As an aside, are kilt pins really intended to weigh the apron down? I've heard that, depite that "tradition," they're intended purely as decoration.

from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, I say wear the class pin as a kilt pin, but I would also say to use an elastic band behind it so it will not get lost. Here is a picture of what I mean:
