Well, the weekend before last my parents came up to Niagara Falls at night, and my father gave me a woolen overcoat he bought in Scotland some fifty years ago. It fits beautifully over both of my kilt jackets. Now I need some weather nasty enough to call for wearing it.

Last weekend we celebrated Christmas, and other than time with the family (and away from the neighbors), I had time to work on my latest handsewn and a set of scissors from my parents.

Two other fascinating books on this subject are Michael Fry's How the Scots Made America, ISBN 0-312-33876-7, and James Webb's Born Fighting, ISBN 0-7679-1688-3. Yes, it is that James Webb, so far as I know the only Annapolis graduate to serve as a Marine officer in 'Nam and then become the Secretary of the Navy.

It's astounding to me how very many different points of view about the Scots-Irish are all enlightening. But I have much need of enlightenment; until I read Webb I thought that "Scots-Irish" meant the people who kept crossing the Irish sea, and their descendants. Now I am told that it means the Ulster Scots and their descendants. "I am only an egg."
