I prefer pleated to Sett. One reason for this is that the kilt I was raised with is pleated to Sett. Macneil of Barra Ancient, being the tartan. Newer kilts are Black Watch, Irish National, with American Heritage on the way. Pleated to Sett presents a very even look to the kilt when standing. When in motion the pleats can provide many interestingly shifting patterns. I am NOT a piper, If I were I would want a heavyweight pleated to stripe just to make it have grander presence. Just MHO.

I prefer my kilts to the stripe if it works with the tartan. I think it makes for a more interesting look. I have also been told that it catches a ladies eye even better

My preference is always to stripe. Just looks better.

However, I'm well aware that not every tartan looks great to stripe.

I've never made the choice. Have always deferred to the kiltmaker's judgement and been pleased with the result.

For what its worth of the 25 tartan kilts I own (not counting the SportKilts pleated to the "gather") 16 are pleated to the sett, 9 are pleated to the stripe.

Like everyone else, the kiltmaker's choice is based on the tartan itself. If I'd chosen different tartans the count would be different.

Ask your kiltmaker to see it both ways and make the choice if you must.

I prefer solid colors, so that makes the stripe slightly more impossible than the sett.

That said, I do prefer the symmetry and consistency of a kilt when pleated to the sett.

The only tartan kilt I am really eager to get my hands on is a fraser hunting USAK, and the obvious choice there would be to pleat to the bright red stripe. However, I like the look of the tartan as is, and I think I'd feel a bit like a baboon with that much red on my @$$.

Of the seven kilts I own, four are pleated to the stripe.... (the three to the sett are SWK's). When I have the 8th sewn upon my return (a xmarks bueat by Kathy Lare, it will be to the sett).. As Cavscout said above "I prefer the Stripe", but as Rocky said "some look better to the sett"
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

I don't own a tartan kilt, yet...however, I prefer the look of the kilt pleated to the sett. I've seen some kilts pleated to the stripe and they've looked great, but I love the kilt when it's pleated to the sett.

I think I generally prefer a kilt pleated to sett. Of the knife pleated kilts I have had made, two were to sett and one to stripe. The one I had pleated to stripe is the US Army tartan, and I did that so it would have a more military appearance.

I have seen some tartans pleated to stripe that look really nice though, so it is all personal preference.
