I was always told to remove headgear when in the presence of the dead, (other than when pipeing) (not that they have ever complained)

As a piper with an honor guard, I do as the rest of the honor guard does; covers on when performing our ceremonial duties, covers off when not (for instance, cover on when piping the casket (or bride) in, uncover when I sit down, cover back on when I pipe the Lament or recessional). I've been told that as a piper I'm considered "under arms" same as if I were bearing a flag or rifle, therefore I wear my bonnet when otherwise it'd be considered ill-mannered.
