It's clothing, not a religion.

I think these two comments really sum it up for me. I think I may have been taking wearing kilts a little more seriously than I realized. It's just a clothing choice. Wear it when it's appropriate and I'll simply wear other things when appropriate. I already wear bike shorts for cycling, nylon quick drying shorts for kayaking, and long pants for bushwhacking. I can always put the kilt on later when it comes time to relax and sit down with a cold one. Thanks everybody for your varying perspectives.

The phrase "Familiarity breeds contempt" springs to mind.
I used to love putting on a suit and tie. I liked how I looked, I liked how people looked at me, I liked how I felt matching different shirt and time combinations.
With my current assignment, I have to wear a suit and tie every day. I don't loathe it, but I'm sure tired of it.
Nothing wrong with taking a break from the kilt. It's not magic, it doesn't have feelings and you are not betraying some code by admitting it's not the best thing to wear in every situation.

My suggestion: Buy a real kilt.

Suggestion: Buy kilts you like, wear them when you feel it's appropriate or comfortable for your situation, and don't worry what people think. Real kilt, modern, semi-traditional, or whatever they are called.
If you don't feel like it don't wear it. Like some have said earlier it is a choice, not necessarily a lifestyle.
Oh and don't worry about the kilt police.....it's all mind over matter. Pay them no mind, because they don't matter.

One caveat, Zookeeper: If you give up the kilt entirely, the XMTS moderators will probably kick your butt right outta here. Forewarned.

And it does feel good to be anonymous, just to blend in... incognito ! ...once in a while. Just get those stares off ya and relax a bit.
In a sense we are lucky : We don't have to wear sunglasses. If we want to become invisible, we just dress differently ... This can be fun !
Hey ! Did I fool you ! I'm not wearing my kilt today !

If you think about it, "Full-Time" for work purposes is about 2200 hours a year. So the idea of kilting 365, all day, is just a bit too much. As Panache has said elsewhere, kilts are a fashion choice, not a fashion imperative. I have fallen prey to the "all kilts all the time" syndrome myself, and only recently bought my first pair of pants in well over a year and a half. I have become so established in my kilt at work I'd end up with all kinds of questions if I showed up in pants, yet I'm moving towards a more balanced approach. I went from 0 to 60 opractically overnite and just need to dial it back a bit.

Yes, I wear a kilt when I want to and don't when I don't want to wear one or it would be inappropriate. I just want the right to wear one, that's all.

You need more tartan in your life!!!
Several things that seperate my life style and yours.
I am a real full-time kilt wearer and have been for several years. The only pants that I still have are three pair of old jeans that I just can't yet just throw away, but I don't wear them; they just sit on the shelf in the closet. (maybe I should cut them apart and make an X-Kilt!)
I'm retired, and wear what I want. I do "deal" with the public in many of my volunteer activities, and I do not receive any bad feedback.
I do not wear anything other than the traditional looking Scottish Attire. The only non-traditional kilt that I own is a solid black casual kilt that I have worn three times with a Hawaiian shirt, when I went to a Hawaiian theme party.
I always wear tartan kilt, hose, garters, sgian dubh, sporran, kilt belt and often a Scottish style hat. I have none of the problems you mentioned.
I have somewhere around 45 kilts right now: about 10 tanks, 15 casuals, and 15 knock-around kilts. I have something like 12 kilt jackets.
I feel I have Scottish attire for any event or occasion. Gardening, puttering in the garage, boating, golf, hiking, fishing, formal, semi-formal, casual, church or bar-hopping and more – everything I do, I do in a kilt. The family, friends, fraternity brothers, neighbors, fellow volunteers and the general public haven’t seen me in a pair of pants for a very long time. I have friends and acquaintances, who have never seen me in anything but a kilt.
I wear the kilt in the best, most respectful way that I know how. Actually, I dress much better now than I ever did in my pants days.
I am not saying that I find anything wrong with the non-traditional kilts, but they just aren’t for me. I have toyed with the idea of getting a utilikilt or clone to wear while I putter around with a hobby, or when I am just doing something in my half of the garage. (My wife insists that she must park her car in the garage, so I only get to use half.)
I think you need to get three of four casual tartan kilts and start wearing them! But wear them in the Scottish style..... I think you will see a difference.
