To make a long story short, the clan system was very much about family and relations. The word, clan, is from the gaelic "clann," meaning children, from the often mythic assertion that all clansmen were descendants of a common progenitor.

The clan system was later supplanted by, and transformed into, the feudal system, which was indeed based on the holding of land, with the clan chief often becoming the baron recognized by the central authority, the crown, of the nation state closer to how we think of it today.

Of course almost all clan tartans came about after the last of feudalism, and long after the clan system that had preceded it. They were largely invented by tartan merchants to sell to the newly affluent urban middle class that had arisen along with the Industrial Revolution, and had a nostaglic vogue for a rural past that had never existed in ways that were used to market to them.

The fellow has it wrong, however as every one has said it really makes no difference. I think to honour both sides of the family is a great thing. On my paternal side i can find no Clan connection, so i wear a Hunting Stewart tartan. My mothers side is the Logan tartan. I wear both in honour of them all.
