Well clearly the US isn't practicing safe government then MOR.

But no matter how valid "de jure et sanguines" might be the Revolutions of 1688 and 1776 and 1789 only go to show that where the people cannot be persuaded to accept a monarch or one from a certain royal house, then it's pretty much a romantic dream.

And the French support for the Colonists can be seen as "one in the eye" for the loss of French Canada, an act of revenge out of pique, rather than wholehearted support for the idea of independence and republicanism.

And the "Taxation without representation" slogans on DC car plates shows that the issue isn't settled yet!

But the scenario of Cumberland replacing his father as Monarch, however brief a reign, over the superior claims of Frederick, Prince of Wales, is somewhat fanciful as it would have required the actual abdications of George II, Frederick and Frederick's son George (later George III).

What the characters say or do need have no basis in historical fact providing it does not conflict with what is actually known.

Some writers have done excellent jobs of doing this - Jean Plaidy for example.

Reminds me of a short story by Lawrence Watt-Evans where a guy is in jail for killing Marlyn Monroe, saying he was from the future, supporting it with a newspaper article with an article that she killed JFK, and his job was to prevent it. (My summary hardly does the story justice.)
