I like collateral attack. For instance:
She: "So you just wear the costume?"
Me: "It's awfully comfortable!"

If her statement was well-intentioned but just clumsily-phrased, no one gets hurt. If she was taking a jab, you've shown a bit of class by not responding in kind. It's like when people say "You're wearing a skirt!" a reply of "Sure am!" tends to completely throw them off (and this is also the point where one of their friends usually hisses "It's a kilt, you dummy!" at them).
