In my humble opinion She was clearly pretending to be a Lady.:ootd:
By Choice, not by Birth

At the last international square dance convention that I attended a few weeks ago, I got in an elevator with a friend and other folks (strangers). One of them asked what event was going on at the hotel. My friend answered it. She (the one who asked) then proceeds to face me and says "and you are pretending to be a Scot."
IMHO, this woman (I can't use the term lady here) should remember that sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool rather than to open your mouth and prove it.

She accused you were pretending to be Scottish? I would have been tempted to give her the full "Sean Connery" treatment - he has definite ideas on how to treat a "lady".

This is just another example of someone without the capasity or at least the demonstrated capacity for expanded thought. In her mind wearing a kilt means you must be a scot, or at least of very recent scottish descendance, otherwise you would dress like the rest of us. To these people the only place to wear heritage clothing is in specific settings like re-enactments, or special occasions like Burns Suppers, etc..., times and places where you are expected to wear heritage clothing. These people cannot see that a kilt may simply be a clothing choice rather than a demonstration of heritage, or that it may be a demonstration of heritage that the wearer does not feel has to be restricted to special occasions.
My wife does not like some of my choices in regular workday socks (worn with p@nts) but merely says so and moves on. However, if I get up one day and put on a kilt without her knowing I was going to do it I get the "why are you wearing a kilt TODAY?", like what is the special occasion, like I have to have a reason. These are people who view the kilt as a costume rather than an item of clothing, a conscious choice to wear instead of pants. And personally I do not think these people will ever get it through their heads that it is anything other than a costume, and that by wearing it you must either be playing some role or seekign attention to some cause.

A few weeks ago, i entered a pub here in Belgium, of course kilted. There was an Engishman at the bar who became very angry with me because i was kilted. He said i was not allowed to wear it and that he would kill me if he saw me in kilt again. He was very serious about that threat.

May be it is my love affair with food, I would answer this lady's question with another question,'When you eat Chinese food, do you pretend that you are Chinese?'

I would have immediately reported him to the Gendarmes/Coppers while there were still witnesses in the pub. That nitwit needs to be locked up.

And just like anything that must be taught, we need to realize that it will take some time, paitience and perseverance. We'll win the masses over eventually...
And sometimes a BIG stick... for the truly dense ones.

I wholeheartedly agree with the rabble's posts, but especially Spartan, and ESPECIALLY Riverkilt - sometimes you gotta "zing" 'em to let 'em know you're there!
Keep on kilting, man!!!

And an Englishman has any say on Scottish wear how? It's akin to this Canadian telling a Texan how to wear his Stetson or to telling a New Yorker the same.
