I have worn my sealskin sporran for years and never had any negative response. I've had a few people ask what the sporran is made from, but that's been it.

Scott, you may just wish to be careful where you go when wearing a fur sporan. Persons with extreme viewpoints tend to congregate and are more brave when they feel they are in the majority. I wouldn't go to an all vegetarian restaurant wearing one, and not that all vegetarians are extremists when it comes to animals, but your fears could be validated in that situation. So get a fur sporran, just don't invite trouble.Respectfully,
 David

Ya know, in 40+ years of wearing full mask, all leather, and seal skin sporrans NO ONE has ever said anything. My wife is a life-long member of the FCS (Fur Coat Society) and no one-- not in Europe or the Americas-- has ever said (or done) anything even remotely threatening.
Generally, I feel that too many people spend far too much time worrying about things that, in extremus, might happen if they wear a fur sporran with their kilt rather than focusing on those things that will happen if they wear white socks with their kilt.

I live very close to San Francisco, so I think I have a higher likelihood of running into fanatics than some.
If there's three of them, and they're bigger than you, lie.

I personally wouldn't be as concerned over whether I would be attacked, but I would be concerned about the ethics, and I think it depends on which particular animal's fur is being used. I don't think I'd ever complain to someone else about their choice of fur, but there are many I wouldn't wear myself. And yes, I am an old hippie.
I have thought of getting a rabbit fur sporran, for example, and although rabbits are cute and cuddly I used to eat rabbit pie frequently (in the days before miximatosis was deliberately introduced by farmers) and my cats kill and eat baby rabbits, so I have nothing against rabbit fur in principle.

In short, I can't see a reason not to wear the fur of an animal I would eat, but that's where I personally would draw the line. I don't see why you should have to be the one to kill the animal, because we don't kill all our own food these days.

OTOH, if a vegan applied that principle they wouldn't wear fur, which doesn't seem a great hardship, but I'd pity them for not allowing themself to wear leather shoes!

I think that this is on topic, because I feel comfortable wearing anything that I can justify with a rational argument. If you are wearing a particular fur where you haven't thought through why you believe it's OK, then standing your ground may not be as easy. While you are thinking about why you shouldn't be painted by some crazy animal rights activist you aren't going to be concentrating on watching what they are doing!

As for the chap who said "the offending post" should be removed from the thread (you know who you are who said that) I see that as laughable bias. Seriously, it's actually funny!

Like MoR, in all my years of wearing the kilt, I've never had a problem--let alone a negative reaction--with wearing an animal mask sporran or a fur sporran. My favourite sporran is an otter mask; I have a badger mask, someone in my family has a pine marten mask sporran which I wear from time to time. Several sealskin sporrans. My conscience is clear.
