After turning to face the front I'd pull the belt forward while lifting my bottom slightly. The bathrobe waist belt smoothes out the pleats and no bunching. Even works in my wife's Subaru. I now store the belt in the compartment between the seats.

I have a truck as well - I am of the step on the running board, butt in and sweep persuasion. Seems to work well. In my wife's car however, I have a bit of a drop before I hit the seat and this can mess up the sweep part. I sometimes find I have to do a rather inelegant reach between my legs and pull the pleats out so they don't bunch up under my butt in a very uncomfortable manner. I might try this belt sweep thing however. Seems like a simple solution.

A tea-towel on the other hand does work. I am working on putting a loop in each corner, so that after sitting and turning forwards, I will be able to pull the tea-towel out. This should act a kind of pleat sweep. If it works, I'll look round for a dark coloured tea-towel to modify (I think it would look better than a light coloured one).

You can pull the towel out from under you once you are in the seat, the kilt is bulky enough without the added bulk of a towel as well.
