The white hose/cream hose issue is akin to cummerbund flaps up/down on a tuxedo. It would be ridiculously rude to walk up to the father of the bride and point out to him that his crumb catchers are upside down.
Wear what you're comfortable with. While people are entitled to their opinions of your attire, the only person whose opinion should matter is your own.
Comfortable and within your budget? Buy them and wear them in good health!

Just to keep this clear... it's more like wearing white socks with a suit or evening wear.

No matter what color or what anyone thinks of said color they are yours as you are the one whom own them do as you wish with them. Tell the snobs to pound sand until they make diamonds for that is all they are useful for.

"routinely heated debate about white hose in general"
I have black, white and cream piper hose. I'm not a piper though...
What if you wear the none color hose with boots like Catskill Mountain Moccasins, Bald Mountain, Sodhoppers, etc?
