I really am glad i asked the question! I will be travelling to Scotland later this year, and you all have provided me with a list of scotches to try locally

If I'm buying: Ardbeg 10 year old, honest Islay malt.
If someone else is buying: Glenfarclas 30 year old, what a treat!

So many good single malts it seems a shame to leave them out, but Balvenie 21 year portwood is hand down the best I've had.

Whisky
My favourites are Bowmore and Laphroaig for the strong peaty, smoky taste, followed by the gentler The Glenlivet although since Pour1Malt took me to an Ardbeg distillery tasting in Dumfries a few months ago, the Ardbeg Super Nova is a very close third.
Apart from those, any whisky will do. As my good but late friend Brian would say, "There is no bad whisky only good and better".

I've grown rather fond of The Glenliven 12 year old... Of course, I like the 18 year old as well, but the 12 fits my budget a bit better.

I like Oban if I am buying, and almost all the highland malts I've ever tried. The smoothest whisky I have had so far was a Glenturret, which I cannot find anywhere at the moment. It was a gift from a good friend, and he has been unable to find any more either.
Islay whisky if I am in the right kind of mood.

I am going to second this one. I don't have any yet, tried it at a whisky tasting, but I prefer it to the 15 I currently have, and it costs less.

If it's any use, here's a link to a good website:

We have one nearby and the staff are most helpful.

I kind wish we had a whiskey shop like that in my area. Generally you're talking about a liquor store, which will have some decent ones, but anything even a little rare and you're generally out of luck. The good news is here in NB, we pay much less for a scotch than neighbouring provinces, so that is good!
