You asked about the homespun: IMO this makes a very nice belted plaid or phillabeg. For a tailored kilt, I definitely like poly-viscose. It holds a pleat like nothing short of worsted wool, has a wonderful feel and drape.
I personally would avoid what CC calls the "ancient kilt." Since it has no historical prececent other than the movie "Braveheart," it tend to be regarded as a little to (pardon the expression) RennFaire-ish.
If you're sold on the "ancient kilt" then the homespun (or PV) should do well. For a belted plaid, consider the PV which is 6 inches wider than the homespun; it may give you more flexibility. I have one in the homespun, and I like it.
